The United Nations has failed to adopt a draft resolution on last week's alleged chemical weapons attack in the Syrian province of Idlib, after a veto from Russia.

China, which has vetoed six resolutions on Syria since the civil war began in 2011, abstained from Wednesday's vote, along with Ethiopia and Kazakhstan. While ten countries voted in favor, Bolivia joined Russia in rejecting it.

The document -- which was drafted by the United Kingdom, the United States and France -- demanded that Syria provide UN investigators with unfettered access to details of its military operations on the day of the alleged toxic gas attack. The US would later launch five-dozen cruise missiles on a Syrian air base, widening the rift between Washington and Moscow.
