SYDNEY, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Australia has charged to 2 games to nil lead over the United States in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Brisbane on Friday.
Australia' s Nick Kyrgios played John Isner in the second match of the series, and dominated, winning in straight sets over the American, currently ranked 23 in the world.
Kyrgios was on fire during the match, but struggled somewhat in the third set, with Isner able to force a tie-breaker. However, the firebrand Australian managed to find a second wind, and took control in the deciding moments with some stellar play.
After the match, Kyrgios was thrilled, and said that it was good to even the score against his American rival who has beaten him twice before in the past.
"He (Isner) is one of the best players in the world. He is a proven player and I knew it was going to be tough," Kyrgios said.
"But I have been playing great tennis and putting my head down and I returned really well today, so I am more than happy to get the win."
Australia will head into Saturday's doubles matchup with high hopes that they can take out the quarterfinal series, after being knocked out of the tournament last year by the United States.
Earlier Friday, Australia's Jordan Thompson defeated American Jack Sock in the first game between the two nations.
The winner of the this quarterfinal will go on to play either Belgium or Italy in the semifinals, to be held in September.
