China's national bureau of statistics announced that in 2016, the country had more than 230 million people over 60 years old, accounting for over 16 percent of the total population.  

Officials say China saw an increase of nearly 9 million senior citizens last year, which means one person reached the age of 60 about every four seconds in China.

The government is making efforts to tackle the problem. Measures, including improving community services and developing social security systems for the aged, have been adopted.
