In South Korea, the Constitutional Court has upheld the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, removing her from office over a graft scandal.

Park's supporters have gathered in front of the Constitutional Court in Seoul to protest against the ruling, triggering clashes with police. Park had been sworn in as the country's first female president in February 2013.  She's now the first elected leader to be ousted.

The decision brings months of political turmoil to a climax, and triggers a new presidential election, to be held within 60 days. Park is obliged to leave the presidential Blue House and loses her executive immunity from prosecution. Acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi read the ruling. He said it was the unanimous decision of the eight justices.
