BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- China aims to cut the energy consumption per unit of GDP by at least 3.4 percent in 2017, while targeting continued reductions in the emission of major pollutants, according to a government work report available to the media ahead of the annual parliamentary session Sunday.

China's energy consumption per unit of GDP fell by 5 percent last year, according to the report to be delivered by Premier Li Keqiang at the opening meeting of the annual session of China's top legislature, the National People's Congress.

China's total energy consumption will be capped at 5 billion tonnes of coal equivalent by 2020, according to a government plan for the 2016-2020 period. This will translate into a 15-percent reduction of energy use per unit of GDP by 2020.
