Editor’s foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation, which aims to showcase the contrasting simplicity and glamour, the antiquity and fashion of China through unique perspectives of young foreign film makers.

As of the year 2016, 101 students from 25 countries were invited to participate in the project. They were stationed in 13 municipality, provinces and autonomous regions here in China. Every filmmaker has worked out a 10-minute short film about Chinese culture around the topic of “ethnic minority”.

The film, Kindred Spirit, directed by Ethel Chua, follows the lives of regular people residing in Kangding, a city in southwestern Sichuan Province. Kangding’s inhabitants are mainly Tibetans. The film crew captures footage of an ordinary street food market stall.

There are two elderly women who have been kindred friends for over 30 years and they go everywhere together. When you see one, you will find the other.

Another person is a wedding photographer, whom the director happened to meet at the local market. Following the photographer, the video leans in to a traditional Tibetan wedding ceremony.

The wedding looks elaborate and luxurious, despite the newlywed couple claiming they do not seek fortune. Hundreds are in attendance. They eat a delicious meal and partake in festivities.

The bride explains that Tibetan Buddhists prefer marrying spouses of the same religion. This keeps the faith strong and future children can learn to love the same religion as one family.

The film then fades into a family’s home, where the widow mother, her daughter and son-in-law live. They seem peaceful and happy, although they do not appear wealthy.

But, it’s a harmonious family, not a bag of gold, that can really make people feel happy and serene in their hearts.

And this indeed seems to be what the director of this film wants to tell us: friendship, love and kinship are everywhere in your daily life, as long as you have a loving heart.
