China's Haiyang-6 scientific research vessel arrived in Chile to resupply on Wednesday, marking the end of its expedition to Antarctica, where many new scientific achievements were made.

It was another chilly and another successful trip to Antarctica. The Haiyang-6 research vessel made many firsts over the last two months: including measuring a deep sea geothermal heat flow in the region.

A shore expedition also debuted on this trip two weeks ago, when 10 scientists carried out field research on King George Island.

"This expedition used high-precision techniques. The geological data obtained will provide first-hand information for the global study of climate change and its influence on the Antarctic region," Xiao Guiyi with Ministry of Land and Resources, said.

Before its journey to the Antarctic, the vessel conducted research in the Pacific Ocean.

After stopping off for supplies in Chile, Haiyang-6 will sail back to the Pacific for a new round of deep sea studies.  

"Regarding the investigation, we will pick a certain area of the sea area where we will carry out several tasks, including a survey on seabed topography, as well as collecting samples of marine sediment," Yang Shengxiong, chief engineer with Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, said.

The Chinese-made vessel set off from southern China's Guangdong province last June. It is expected to return in mid-April.
