The Chinese mainland has reiterated that the 1992 Consensus is the political basis for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. Its statement was in response to the Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen's recent rhetoric, that cross-Strait relations would see a 'breakthrough' in the second half of the year, and the two sides should be looking ahead for ways to deal with the new situation.

"The 1992 Consensus, which reflects the One-China principle, is the political basis for peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. It's essential to acknowledge the core understanding that the two sides of the Strait belong to One China, no matter how you describe the development path of the relations and whatever words you use in the description such as 'new mentality', 'new ways' or 'new mode'," An Fengshan, spokesman for Taiwan Affairs Office of The State Council, said.

The spokesman added that Beijing will try to attract more Taiwan residents to work and live on the mainland. Its policies will cover employment, social insurance and living standards. He also said the mainland has always encouraged and supported Taiwan enterprises, and has worked hard to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.
