Ancient Chinese poetry may seem inaccessible at first to most people, especially the youth. But a Chinese TV show has proven otherwise.

Ancient wording in poetry is a turn off for many young people in China. But there's one exception.

Wu Yishu, a 16-year-old highschooler from Shanghai, wowed the nation by beating over 100 contestants in a Chinese poetry recitation game.

From reciting phrases, to filling out words. From understanding the background, to identifying poems just by looking at a sand painting. There's no stopping her, as far as poetry is concerned. She did so well, even she's surprised.

"It’s the finale, everyone is so strong, and each round is difficult… I came here thinking I wouldn't give all the correct answers, but I did! And my score was very high. It's a surprise," Wu said.

In the final round, she gave the answer before seeing the complete list of choices. With that bold move, she brought home the crown. People online found her feat impressive. 

On WeChat, one user cites a poem to say he finally knows what a person will look like if his or her mind is full of poetry.

Another person online said he watches the show on his knees.

The show gained a 16-percent TV ratings market share during its finale. Some viewers are now able to recite one or two poems because of the show. And Wu has won over a legion of new fans, and that's just how things go.
