The 28th Winter Universiade continued in Almaty Kazakhstan on Tuesday. China men's team took to the ice for the 5000-meter relay in short track speed skating with a definite chance to come out on top in the often unpredictable event, but they never would have imagined the scenario that played out.
China, Kazakhstan and South would exchange the lead early on. South Korea and hosts Kazakhstan take firm control of first and second with around ten laps remaining. The two teams are expected to claim the top two positions on the podium, but that's not at all what would happen.
On the final turn of the 5000 meter race, the Korean skater collides with the Kazakh man and both of them go down. The Chinese skater is right behind in third and suddenly finds himself in first place. China would win in a time of seven minutes 4.44 seconds. Russia finish second, Kazakhstan third, while South Korea are penalized and disqualified.
