Editor’s foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation, which aims to showcase the contrasting simplicity and glamour, the antiquity and fashion of China through unique perspectives of young foreign film makers.

The film, Pekish Pingjiang Road, directed by Ryan Paturzo-Parson, captures the tastes and smells of local Suzhou cuisine at the city’s restaurant row on Ping Jiang Road.

There’s an elderly man, who has cooked sesame snacks for over 30 years at the same street corner in Suzhou. He works outdoors in good and bad weather days. He adjusts by processing the snacks in different ways in different seasons.

He’s originally from Jiangxi, a central China province. He has more than 40 years’ experience cooking and selling the special sesame snacks.

Pingjiang Road appears to be the most popular site for local residents and visitors to grab a bite of authentic Suzhou cuisine. The locals have a fondness for the ingredients - sesame and peanuts, while another dish, known as squirrel fish also remains the specialty here.

The Suzhou people have a sweet tooth, preferring to eat squirrel fish with a sweet sauce. The owner of Big Tree restaurant explained that every cooking establishment on Pingjiang Rd. serves squirrel fish with their own secret recipe.

And everybody loves to uncover a mystery, so it’s time to see what’s in the kitchen at a restaurant on Pingjiang Rd.
