Editor’s foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation, which aims to showcase the contrasting simplicity and glamour, the antiquity and fashion of China through unique perspectives of young foreign film makers.

The film, Skating Shenyang, directed by Oscar Ascencio, takes a closer look at a group of young adult skateboarders, who practice tricks on downtown streets.

The favorite spot for them is Taiyuan Business Street, which offers plenty of concrete pavement. The camera crew follows just one group in the city located in Northeast China.

One man owns a skateboarding shop that he started with 10 people in 2002. He’s married and has two little children. His wife supports his skateboarding vocation.

All other members appear to be single, composed of about one half - men. They joined together not only for a love of skateboarding, but because they help each other out in good times and bad.

The leader of the skateboarding crew is a man who fixes printers for a living. He works hard and loves to play hard. Apparently, the group has practiced for a number of years and they are all determined to improve their free-style techniques.

To do tricks means practice, practice and more practice. When learning them they will make many mistakes, but they must keep doing it over until they get it right and it’s just like a routine.
