Editor’s foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation, which aims to showcase the contrasting simplicity and glamour, the antiquity and fashion of China through unique perspectives of young foreign film makers.

The film, Changing Face of Sichuan Opera, directed by Gerhard Duru features a Sichuan Opera group playing at a theater located in Chengdu. It’s similar to other formats of classical Chinese Opera styles, but with some unique characteristics.

Actors in Sichuan like to utilize magic techniques to please audiences. They will do instant flipping of costumes from the color red to blue, as well as face mask changes at the blink of an eye.

Apparently, the most popular skill that dazzles audiences the world over is fire-spitting. Perhaps, it could be a serious fire hazard on stage, but performers are professionals and know what they are doing.

The magic of Sichuan Opera should demonstrate to people living in a hustle-and-bustle society that it’s time to slow down and enjoy the moments of life. We should stop rushing to chase after big money and accept the joys we witness daily.

Meanwhile, Sichuan Opera tries to change with the times as well. The crowds love magic, so they add more of it. The changing colors can be a lot like life, one day we may feel sad and blue, but at an instant later something could make us red-hot excited.

Life changes and so does the Sichuan Opera.
