Editor’s foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation, which aims to showcase the contrasting simplicity and glamour, the antiquity and fashion of China through unique perspectives of young foreign film makers.

The film, Tianjin Driver, directed by Sarah Doering, follows up with an elderly woman who is a taxi driver in the Chinese northern port city, Tianjin.

In most instances, men work as taxi drivers in China, since a woman could be at higher risk of harm. But the woman explains she’s good at reading people and if she senses something wrong, she won’t give the person a ride.

She noted that all taxi drivers must have strong intuition, a sixth sense. Before a passenger pick-up, the driver must immediately look into the person’s eyes to determine if something is not right with them, and if so they just drive away. The woman said just one mistake could cost a life.

Additionally, the woman mentioned nearly all taxi drivers in Tianjin have the local roads memorized in their heads and don’t need to use a GPS-style tracking device.

That’s amazing, since taxi drivers from around the world rely more on GPS to take passengers to their destinations. The passenger in the video, could be overheard joking that in her native Germany, if the GPS stops working, local taxi drivers get lost.

Along with the taxi driver’s story, you would also have a view of daily life in Tianjin, including local snack, city scenarios and how local people live, etc.
