Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stopped at several memorials in Hawaii. Abe became the first sitting Japanese prime minister to visit the US National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as Punchbowl. The memorial honors sailors and Marines killed in the 1941 attack during World War Two.

Abe also visited Makiki Cemetery in Honolulu, which is dedicated to Japanese who settled in Hawaii in the 1800s.

On Tuesday, Abe and U.S. President Barack Obama will visit the site of the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. Abe is on a trip intended to show a strong alliance between his country and the United States.

"On that occasion, I am very much looking forward to sending out a strong message about the value of reconciliation as well as our sincere prayers for those who died in the war," said Abe.
