The second place Roma looking to gain ground on Serie A leaders Juventus. The Giallorossi had fallen seven points behind after losing to the five-time champs last weekend. But they could cut the deficit back to four with a win at home against mid-table Chievo Verona, a club which came into kickoff unbeaten in their previous three league matches.
The visitors working to push that run to four, as Mariano Izco finds Jonathan de Guzman for a diving header, and a 1-nil lead in the 37th minute at Rome Olympic Stadium. Izco's cross right on target. De Guzman lucky the defender's foot is not on target.
Stephan El Shaarawy's free kick clears the wall and finds the net just before half-time, as the hosts draw level at 1-all. Chievo's goalkeeper missing a great save by inches.
Roma bring the ball into the box early in the second half, and Verona do a horrible job of clearing it out. Edin Dzeko pounces, and the Bosnian bags his 21st goal of the season, making it 2-1. (REPLAY) The visitors bouncing the ball around like a hot potato, and Dzeko makes sure he is onside, before his side-footed finish.
In stoppage time, Filippo Costa brings down Diego Perotti in the box, and that's gonna be a penalty on the visitors.
Perotti then steps up from the spot to complete a 3-1 victory for Roma, who are once again four points behind in the standings.
Elsewhere, Manolo Gabbiandini's late penalty kick rescued a point for third place Napoli, who battled to a 3-all draw at Fiorentina. Andrea Belotti tallied the only goal as Torino edged Genoa 1-nil. Diego Farias had a double to help Cagliari outscore Sassuolo 4-3.
So with Juventus preparing for this evening's Italian Super Cup match against AC Milan, the Old Lady will take a four-point lead into the winter break. Napoli sit seven back, one point ahead of Lazio. Torino's win helped them jump Fiorentina for eighth place.
