The European Commission has proposed the tightening of controls on cash and precious metals transfers from outside the European Union.

This comes after the Berlin attack, and is in a bid to shut down a possible route for the funding of militant attacks on the continent.

Under the new proposals, customs officials in EU states will be able to step up checks on cash and prepaid payment cards transferred via post or through freight shipments.

Authorities will also be given the power to seize cash or precious metals carried by suspect individuals entering the bloc.

The commission is also proposing common rules on the freezing of financial resources related to terrorism, and asset confiscation from those thought to be connected to criminals.
