In response to US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Abraham Denmark's comments that Taiwan intends to increase its defense spending to deal with threats from the Chinese mainland, the foreign ministry has urged the US to adhere to the One China principle.

"China has repeatedly made its position clear. The One China principle is the political basis of the relationship between China and the United States," said Geng Shuang, spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"We have emphasized that if the principle is damaged or disrupted, then healthy ties cannot be sustained and cooperation in key areas will have to be halted."

"Regarding the issue of Taiwan being threatened, we are against any official visits and military cooperation between the US and Taiwan."

"We urge the relevant party in the US to honor its commitment to the One China policy and the principles of the three joint communiqués, and properly deal with Taiwan-related issues in a discreet manner, so as to avoid unnecessary disruptions to overall bilateral relations."
