Several New Zealand government ministers have thrown their support behind Finance Minister Bill English, the front-runner to replace Prime Minister John Key.

Among the senior officials are Social Services Minister Paula Bennett and Transport Minister Simon Bridges.

English announced his candidacy on Tuesday after Key announced his resignation to spend more time with his family.

An October survey showed English leading a four-way race, with 21 percent support rating.
The ruling National Party will hold a meeting on December 12th to decide the new party leader and prime minister.
