The Chinese Foreign Ministry has reiterated the One-China policy after Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen had reportedly planned to transit in the U.S. on her way to visit Nicaragua. It is thought Tsai was seeking to use the stop to meet with US president-elect Donald Trump or his aides.

"This sort of petty action is typical of Taiwan's administration and its leader. It is clear to see the ulterior political motives behind this transit diplomacy," said Lu Kang, Spokesperson, Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The report follows a phone conversation between Donald Trump and Tsai Ing-wen last Friday, which broke a more than 4-decade-old precedent barring such direct communication.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said that countries wishing to develop relations with China should abide by the One-China policy.

Lu also responded to a question about Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plan to visit Pearl Harbor on December 27. Calls in Japan have urged Abe to visit the Massacre memorial hall in the east Chinese city of Nanjing instead of Pearl Harbor.

"A number of locations in China, as well as in other parts of Asia, are available for Japan to offer condolences to victims of its wartime atrocities, if it wishes to apologize sincerely and introspect profoundly," Lu said.
