In the FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships, China's Wang Shun won a bronze medal in the Rio Olympics in the men's 200 meter individual medley, and the 22-year-old would look to improve on that in the final.

Wang was 6th in the preliminaries, and he started in the 7th lane on Tuesday night. As many top medley swimmers including Ryan Lochte did not compete, Wang's biggest rival might be Daiya Seto in the fourth lane. The Japanese was first after the preliminaries.

Wang did pretty well in the opening butterfly, and is in third place after the first 50 meters. Wang then shows great form in the backstroke as he surges into the lead. The following breaststroke is not Wang's strong suit. But the Rio Olympic medallist does enough to stay ahead over the 50 meters to remain in the lead.

The Zhejiang native is in control in the freestyle, and powers ahead to the finish, grabbing gold in 1 minute, 51.74 seconds.

The victory means he's China's first male swimmer to win an individual medley world title. Germany's Philip Heintz takes second, while Seto has to settle for bronze.

Wang said, "I didn't expect to win. My target had been top three. I focused on myself during the competition. I just want to swim at my level. My breaststroke was not good in the morning. So I tried my best in the evening."

South Korean veteran claims first world title since 2011

In the men's 400m freestyle final, Park Tae-hwan was looking to win his first world title since 2011.

The South Korean veteran is in the fifth lane, and he beats Aleksandr Krasnykh of Russia to win the gold in 3 minutes, 34.59 seconds.
