The latest budget amounts to a 2 point 3 percent increase on the previous year's. Of the total 5.1 trillion yen requested, 105.6 billion yen will be used to upgrade PAC-3 surface-to-air missile systems to strengthen the country's missile defense capabilities. 14.7 billion will be invested in new missile interceptors and modernisation of interceptor carriers.

Additionally, 76 billion will go on the development of a new submarine with advanced surveillance capabilities to tackle emergencies in the East China Sea. There are also plans to develop a long-range ship-to-air missile and acquire F-35 fighter jets.
