The Cuban government says Castro's ashes will be settled at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in the city of Santiago de Cuba. The cemetery is known for holding the remains of revolutionary heroes, like those who died fighting alongside Castro in the leader's first insurgency battle in 1953.

Jose Marti, another Cuban national hero, is also buried there. He died in the late 19th century during the independence war against Spanish colonists.
