Over in Germany, defending Bundelsiga champions Bayern Munich were at home to Bayer Leverkusen. The Bavarians found themselves in the odd position of looking to bounce back from two straight losses suffered in the Champions League and on the domestic front. Even stranger is that for the first time in forever, they are not on top of the standings with newly promoted Leipzig enjoying their perennial perch instead.

Bayern take the lead at the half hour mark when Philipp Lahm's shot is saved by Bernd Leno, but the rebound pops up for Thiago Alcantara to nod over the line uncontested.

But just five minutes later Leverkusen even the score. Hakan Calhanoglu works a neat one-two with Julian Brandt before lifting a shot past Manuel Neuer from a tight angle into the roof of the net to make it 1-1.

But Bayern regain the lead when Mats Hummels rises to meet Joshua Kimmich's corner and head home. And the champions would go on to win 2-1.

Other results on Saturday saw Cologne continue their strong season with a draw against Augsburg. Moenchengladbach drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim after holding Manchester City in the Champions League. Dortmund suffered a 2-1 loss to Frankfurt while Ingolstadt drew with Wolfsburg as did Hamburg and Werder Bremen.

Here's how the table looks with Leipzig on top, three points ahead of Bayern. Frankfurt still sit third with 24 points. Cologne and Hoffenheim are both on 22 with the Hoffers trailing on goal difference.
