China has urged all sides involved in the clashes in Myanmar to stay calm, and to immediately halt military operations. Spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Geng Shuang said China is seriously concerned about the clashes, and is closely monitoring the situation. He said China hopes all sides can resolve differences through dialogue and negotiation, in order to ensure peace in Myanmar.
Ethnic militant forces in Myanmar have clashed with the military in the northern area bordering China. Gunfire broke out at around 2-am local time on Sunday. The fierce fighting killed at least two Myanmar civilians. Some of the injured were rushed to hospitals in China for treatment. Chinese villagers living in Yunnan Province's Wanding Town said stray bombs fell across the border. One villager reported damage on a solar water heater on his roof. Authorities in Wanding Town have activated an emergency response mechanism and deployed more armed police along the border to maintain order.
