Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte. Xi says the two nations should continue to work to repair previously-strained relations and manage their differences properly.

Xi urges both sides to explore the possibility of cooperating in the South China Sea. This will transform the area from a source of tension to a major part of friendly bilateral ties.
For his part, Duterte says the Philippines is willing to properly address maritime issues with China through dialogue and consultation. He says the nation follows an independent foreign policy and is willing to be friends with “brotherly” China forever.
