The International Organization for Migration says more than 4,600 migrants have died while making the journey to Europe so far this year. The death toll has surpassed last year's number by more than 1,000, despite a lower number of sea arrivals in Europe.

The organization says most tragedies occurred when migrants tried to reach the continent through the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa. The organization added that the disproportionate death toll indicates that the migrants' journeys to Europe are becoming more and more dangerous.
