Full coverage: Xi Visits Ecuador, Peru and Chile, Attends APEC Summit
President Xi's visit has attracted much attention in the global media.
The China News Service reported Xi's visit to Ecuador is the first to the country by a Chinese head of state. Peru is the only country in Latin America that has both free trade agreement and comprehensive strategic partnership with China. Chile is the first Latin American country to sign a bilateral treaty under World Trade Organization framework and also the first to sign a free trade agreement with China.
The Aju Business Daily said President Xi's visit would enhance China's influence in the area. Peru is developing at three percent every year, which is rare in the region. Peru and China talked about railway construction in September. Ecuador is mired in an oil price slump and the aftermath of an earthquake, and needs external investment.
Jorge Heine, the Chilean ambassador to China, said in a recent report in the Executive Intelligence Review that he is looking forward to President Xi's visit. Heine said Latin America should actively participate in the Road and Belt Initiative. He also said China's ability in infrastructure projects would help Latin America deal with its construction, industry and telecom needs.
