China started late in network technologies and has lagged behind for years. But innovations at home have led to several breakthroughs in this field. CCTV's Paolo Montecillo has this report.
It's a proud moment for developers of driverless car technology in China. An unmanned car made in China has pulled off a successful test run through Silicon Valley in the US.
And it's all thanks to cutting-edge network technology that features visual computing and artificial intelligence. Much of the progress in this field is a result of technology developed within China.
Technical director of unmanned vehicle program, Wang Jing'ao, said, "For example, we've gotten four titles out of six vehicle tracing indices. However, the list is refreshed frequently. If we don't make progress, we'll lag behind without the upper hand."
The China-made Sunway-TaihuLight system was named the world's fastest computer at the recent International Supercomputing Conference this year.
And of course, it was Chinese technology that helped win this accolade. The Shenwei processor was the key to opening the door to ultra-fast computing.
Chen Zuoning from Chinese academy of engineering, said, "The Chinese government has been supporting the development of high-performance computers for several decades. It was hard to develop Sunway-TaihuLight, but we finally made a breakthrough. Now we're leading in the world."
China is also working hard to develop the fifth generation of mobile communication technology, also known as 5G.
Being the first to develop certain types of technology means China will be able to influence standards used around the world.
Wu Hequan from Chinese academy of engineering said, "Five-G will make it possible to connect one million devices to the so-called Internet of Things within one square meter. In the future, it will also be available on high-speed trains moving as fast as 500 kilometres per hour. In the area of the Internet of Vehicles, it can be used in unmanned vehicles, assisted driving and the management of smart cities."
Wu believes China's future internet will be faster, more intelligent and more reliable.
