Full coverage: 3rd World Internet Conference

Here's a quick recap of what China wanted to promote during the previous two summits in Wuzhen.

The annual World Internet Conference, also known as the Wuzhen Summit, was first held in 2014. Chinese government agencies organized the conference as a way to discuss Internet issues and policies.

Notable leaders from China's internet sector -- including Alibaba's Jack Ma, Tencent's Pony Ma and Baidu's Robin Li -- have attended the summit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the prime ministers of Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan attended the second World Internet Conference.

Xi promoted "internet sovereignty" at the second conference. The president urged the world to respect each country’s internet sovereignty and their right to choose their own Internet development paths and management models.

Xi's speech drew praise from Alibaba's Jack Ma. Official Chinese media said that Xi's speech showed that China was bullish on Internet growth.

State media outlets also said that China would build a "Digital Silk Road for Win-Win Cooperation-Information Infrastructure Partnership".

The second World Internet Conference gave birth to the Wuzhen Initiative. The initiative called on all countries to promote Internet development and foster cultural diversity in cyber space. It also urged all countries to share the fruits of Internet development, ensure peace and security in cyber space, and improve global Internet governance.
