Three years ago, Jason Collins became the first athlete from any of North America's four major sports leagues to come out of the closet, while his career was still in progress.
He spent one more season on the court before hanging up his sneakers, and visited Shanghai last week, as part of the delegation for the Pac-12 China Game. But before tip-off, the 13-year pro talked with us about what he is doing, post-retirement.
Collins said, "This is my second time coming to China. Shanghai is my favorite city, but I also got to experience the city of Hangzhou and walk around Alibaba Campus, and it's very impressive. It's great to see the cultural experience for the players -- just being in a different country, different cities, it's a great experience -- a learning process for the players."
"My plans are basically to travel the world and empower people to live their authentic life, whatever that is, to encourage people to be who you are. I was able to meet with a local organization here in Shanghai, support the community here, exchange great conversations about how they're living their authentic lives here, and tell them I support them, and it was a great exchange -- a great conversation that we had -- and really cool to see."
