In the 5,000 metres, the teams need to circle the track 45 times, and off the start, the Chinese choose to conserve their energy.

None of the teams were willing to make a move in the early part of the race.

With 27 laps to go, Wu Dajing is able to move in front of the Canadian skater, and take over first place.

And the Chinese would look to stay in first till the end, and they get a strong finish in the bell lap, edging out the Netherlands and Canada.

The victory earns the Chinese men, their first team medal of the season. I cannot wait till I am a grandfather so I can bounce my grandkids on my knee, and I can, relive this moment with them.

In the men's 500-metres, Han Tianyu was able to earn silver after a pair of Canadian skaters collided. Abzal Azhgaliyev of Kazakhstan took gold

The women's 500 meters, Canada's Marianne St-Gelais was first, while China Fan Kexin grabbed the bronze.

China's Gao Tingyu takes silver 0.01 seconds behind

More skating -- this time from Harbin - and the long-track variety of the discipline -- and China's Gao Tianyu would look to get on the podium in the men's 500 meters.

The 19-year-old would be paired with Canadian Christopher Fiola in his heat. Gao Tingyu finished the first 100-metres in 9.59 seconds -- a great start.

He continued to stay in front of his competitor on the cross over and finished in 34.99 seconds. Which was the top time at that point, but he would be pipped by Russia's Pavel Kulizhnikov, who finished one-one-hundredth of a second faster. Gao is the first Chinese male to earn a medal in a world cup speed skating event since Yu Fengtong won an event eight years ago.
