Germany has withdrawn its approval for a Chinese takeover of chip equipment maker Aixtron, citing security concerns. That's after the German government already rejected a Chinese request for approval of a takeover of Osram's light bulb unit.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said Wednesday that it hopes Germany's re-examination of the Aixtron case is an exception and doesn't mean Berlin has changed policies.
Commerce Ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said Chinese investment in Germany isn't large but has created numerous jobs and significant tax revenue for the country. Shen also said that concerns that Chinese acquisitions in Germany would take away technology and jobs are unwarranted. Shen said China hopes Germany can remain calm and create a fair environment for investors.
