Cross-strait relations have improved significantly in the past two decades, thanks to a series of historic meetings. Let’s look back at those meetings and what they achieved.

In April 1993, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan had the historic “Wang-Koo” meeting.

Wang Daohan, head of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits - or ARATS, and Koo Chen-fu, chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation - or SEF, met in Singapore. The meeting paved the way for the improvement of cross-strait ties.

Kuomintang Vice Chairman Chiang Pin-kung led a delegation that visited the Chinese mainland in March 2005.

It was the first ever Kuomintang delegation from Taiwan to visit the mainland since 1949.

In April that year, Lien Chan, the Kuomintang chairman at the time, also visited the mainland and met with Hu Jintao, the former General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

It was the first meeting between the top leaders of the CPC and the Kuomintang in 60 years.

Since then, communication across the strait has been more frequent.

In April 2008, Hu Jintao met with Vincent Siew, chairman of the Taiwan-based Cross-Strait Common Market Foundation, at the Boao Asia Forum.

In June the same year, Kuomintang Vice Chairman Chiang Pin-kung, who was also the chairman of SEF, met with ARATS Chairman Chen Yunlin in Beijing.

The then Kuomintang Chairman Wu Po-hsiung also visited the Chinese mainland in 2008 and 2009, meeting with Hu Jintao on both trips.

Cross-strait ties have continued to improve.

In February 2013, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, met with Lien Chan, the honorary chairman of the Kuomintang.

Xi Jinping also met with the former Kuomintang Chairman Eric Chu in May 2015.

Eric Chu is the first Kuomintang chairman to set foot on the mainland -- at a time when the Kuomintang is Taiwan's ruling party -- since 1949.

In September 2015, Xi Jinping met with Lien Chan again.

This time, Lien was invited to attend the September 3rd parade at Tian'anmen Square.

In November 2015, Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou, the top leaders of both sides, held a historic face-to-face meeting in Singapore.

It was the first meeting between the leaders of the two sides since 1949.

During the meeting, they fully acknowledged the fruits of the peaceful development of cross-strait ties since 2008.

The meeting also endorsed the high-level of political consensus that adheres to the "1992 Consensus."

The two sides also vowed to cooperate and commit to the revival of the Chinese nation, as the peoples of both sides are all of Chinese descent.
