China UnionPay has banned Chinese mainland customers from using their bank cards to buy insurance products overseas other than for accident and medical-related policies.
The country’s biggest bank card provider said over the weekend that Chinese mainland customers using UnionPay debit and credits cards will only be allowed to buy accident, illness, and tourism-related insurance policies overseas.
UnionPay says that other investments are prohibited. The company reiterated that transactions involving overseas insurance policies using its cards will be capped at U.S.$5,000. That is the limit imposed by the Chinese forex regulator earlier this year.
There is still no limit on how many times a customer can use his card to complete a transaction.
