An exhibition of contemporary Chinese glass art under the name of 'A Chinese Liuli Flower' has opened in Brussels, Belgium. The exhibition is presented by the China Cultural Center in Brussels, the Centre of International Cultural Exchange and the Liuli China Museum Shanghai. All the exhibits were created by renowned Liuli artists Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi.

"A Chinese Liuli Flower" blooming in Brussels.

Flowers and Buddhism are key elements in these 12 glass works on display.

They were made through the technique "Pate de verre", a kiln casting method to make glass. These "dream-like" glass works reflect the inconstant character of life which is common in Chinese philosophy, according to an introduction to the works.

These liuli art pieces were created by Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi, the founders and pioneers of contemporary Chinese liuli art.

"Liuli flowers perfectly express the Chinese concept of 'flowers and Buddhism'. Flowers bloom, flowers wilt - it is the embodiment of life’s impermanence. And liuli is both beautiful and fragile. I think these liuli flowers can express the profound depth of Eastern philosophy and the symbolism of Eastern aesthetics," said Loretta H. Yang.

Loretta H. Yang was a household name in Taiwan in the 1970s as a result of her renowned acting career and winning of the Golden Horse Awards for best actress.

In 1987, Yang together with esteemed director Chang Yi, left the film industry to establish Liuligongfang - the first glass art studio in Asia. In using the term liuli, the ancient Chinese word for glass, the artists emphasize the connection to their cultural heritage and their passion for learning and experimentation.

Yang and Chang have devoted nearly three decades to Chinese contemporary glass art. Their works have been collected in many renowned museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Palace Museum in Beijing.
