Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe may have a chance for three more years in office until 2021 after his party extended the term limit for its leader.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has decided to extend the maximum tenure of its leadership from two terms to three. The decision is expected to be approved at the party’s annual convention next March. Abe is now serving a second consecutive term which ends in 2018.
Concerns have been raised that the extension will boost his ambition to amend the pacifist Constitution.
