Iraqi soldiers, Kurdish fighters and US-led coalition forces are carrying out a major offensive to retake the city of Mosul from ISIL.

500 Iraqi police officers have arrived on the outskirts of the city to support the military assault. 

French President Francois Hollande has also ordered his country's largest aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, to remain in the region until mid-December to provide military support.
