Some 2,400 migrants had been rescued from boats in the Mediterranean on Saturday. The Italian coast guard said some 20 operations were carried out, including rescues involving an Irish naval ship and boats from humanitarian groups. It also said 14 bodies have been recovered in the past two days.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 3,000 migrants have gone missing or died this year, while trying to reach Europe by boat.
