The UN's Human Rights Council has passed a resolution calling for enhanced investigation of rights violations and abuses in Aleppo.

"The result of the recurred vote are as follows: 24 in favour, 7 against, 16 abstentions. Resolution L1 as orally revised is therefore adopted," said Negash Kebret Botora, Vice President, UN Council of Huamn Rights.

The council voted on the measure at a special council session on Friday in Geneva on the "deteriorating situation of human rights" in Syria and in Aleppo.

The resolution largely reiterated previous council resolutions on Syria, but calls on the Commission of Inquiry on Syria to specifically investigate crimes in Aleppo and report back to the 47-member body.

Syria has been locked in a five-year civil war since March 2011. Over 300,000 people have been killed as a result of protracted fighting, while millions more have been displaced.
