The Chinese defense ministry is protesting against a patrol by a US Navy destroyer in the South China Sea. The ministry says the move was, as it puts it, "illegal" and "provocative".

In a statement on its website, the ministry says two Chinese Navy ships had warned the US warship to leave during the patrol. It adds that the Chinese military will increase air and sea patrols according to need.
