Over 200 residents in storm-hit Haiti have contracted cholera, prompting the World Health Organization to send one million vaccine doses. According to the W-H-O, a sudden surge in cholera cases was reported in the country's south.

The intestinal disease is transmitted through contaminated food and water. Treatment has become a challenge as Hurricane Matthew damaged a quarter of all health facilities in the southern region.

Authorities are set to hold a large-scale immunization campaign to prevent the disease from spreading. Aside from cholera vaccines, residents are also in dire need of food and clean water. The United Nations says about 1.4 million Haitians need urgent aid.
