China has called on the international community to push for the solution of the Syrian crisis through dialogue. Liu Jieyi, China’s permanent representative to the U.N., explained China's rationale.
Liu said China abstained from the French-drafted resolution because some portions do not reflect the full respect for the sovereignty, unification and territorial integrity of Syria, adding that the constructive views of some council members have not been incorporated.
Regarding the Russian-drafted resolution, Liu noted that it gave consideration to ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, joint efforts to combat terrorism as well as political negotiations. It also reflected a respect for the sovereignty, independence, unification and territorial integrity of the Syria. China voted in favor of Russia’s resolution, but regretted that it was not adopted.
