New data shows that the Islamic State militant group has lost more than a quarter of the territory it once controlled in Syria and Iraq. According to the security and defence analyst IHS Conflict Monitor, ISIL's control has shrunk by 28 percent since its peak in January of last year.

They now control 65,500 square kilometers. However, the data also showed that their losses had slowed in the last three months.
