Hurricane Matthew’s death toll reached 842 on Friday. Tens of thousands are now homeless, and a cholera outbreak is claiming more lives. Information has come in from remote areas that were cut off by the storm.

At least 175 people are dead in villages clustered in the hills and on the coast of Haiti’s fertile western tip. Rural clinics are overflowing with patients and many of them are receiving treatment late. Food has been scarce, and at least seven people have died of cholera, likely because of flood waters mixing with sewage.

“We have big problems here. And what I mean is that almost all houses were destroyed. Luckily, we are still alive, but we have lost everything. Look, this was my small business, and now it’s gone. Everything was destroyed by the rain. We neither have food to eat, nor hospitals for healthcare. I urge you to go visit the communal hospital, because we need medicine, doctors and other aid,” a resident said.
