Full coverage: THAAD Deployment in South Korea

China has reiterated its objection to the deployment of the United States' THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea. Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang warned the US and South Korea that China would take countermeasures. The remarks come as S. Korea has announced a new site for the THAAD system.

"The US deployment of the THAAD system in South Korea will not resolve the security concerns of the related parties. China firmly opposes this move and will take the necessary measures to safeguard its national security interests and the regional strategic balance. We strongly urge the US and South Korea to acknowledge the legitimate concerns of countries including China, and stop the process of deployment," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang.

South Korea announced on Friday a site change for the U.S. missile shield system. The government had initially planned to install the American system at a military base in Seongju county in North Gyeongsang Province. Authorities say the new site -- a golf course, 18 kilometers north of the base -- is more suitable. Seoul and Washington claim the system is to counter threats from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. But China and Russia believe it's too much, and will break the strategic balance of the region.
