Australian entertainer Kylie Minogue is celebrating her career with an exhibition of her stage wardrobe in her home town of Melbourne. The display charts Minogue's successful career and the costumes that helped her stand out.

But the one item you won't see at the exhibition is her famous gold hot pants that she wore in the music video "Spinning Around". They're tucked away in the art centre's private collection, but if it's feathers and sequins you're after, then there's plenty of that.

Kylie Minogue made a triumphant return home to Melbourne to open a new exhibition celebrating her live performances. The show brings together costumes and memorabilia from a career spanning nearly three decades.

For the pop princess, this was a homecoming like no other. The collection showcases costumes and memorabilia from her live shows which began in 1989.

"My life and stress and triumph and tears that's now on display there. The costumes are just taken such good care of which is a far cry from the way I remember them which is: 'get me out of this...get back on stage'," Kylie Minogue said.

The singer started out making her own costumes with her grandmother. But now she works with some of the world's best designers, like Dolce and Gabbana.

The display charts Minogue's successful career and the costumes that helped her stand out.

"I would never have reached that point in time without the lycra and the Janome (sewing machine) and throwing a few beads on something back in 1989," Kylie Minogue said.

The performer started donating her costumes to the Arts Centre Melbourne 15 years ago and now there are over 800 items in the collection.

The exhibition runs until the 22nd of January 2017 and is free to enter.
