Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17th, 2014. It was flying from Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. All 298 people on board - most of them Dutch citizens - were killed.
At the time of the incident, rebels were fighting government forces in the eastern part of Ukraine. The downing of MH17 played a significant role in a decision by the European Union and the United States to impose sanctions on Russia.
Western investigators and Kiev have claimed that pro-independence insurgents shot down the aircraft. Moscow denied the allegations and said the plane was shot by a missile from territory controlled by Ukrainian government troops.
A civilian investigation by the Dutch Safety Board concluded last year that the airliner had been downed by a Russian-made BUK missile launched from eastern Ukraine.
