China has issued new law enforcement guidelines to ensure fairer prosecution standards and strengthen supervision over law enforcement personnel.
The guidelines build on China's current litigation system. They require police to put in place a more standardized system for collecting evidence. Detectives are also urged to record all witness testimony to ensure confessions are not coerced.
The guidelines call for protecting lawyers rights and include proposals to strengthen the right of suspects to meet with their defense counsel.
In addition, the guidelines make law enforcement personnel personally accountable for their handling of criminal cases.
