President Francois Hollande says he wants the migrant camp in the northern town of Calais closed by the end of the year. Hollande was in Calais for the first time since taking office.

"Our objectives are clear – to guarantee the security of the people of Calais, maintain public order and ensure that migrants and refugees have dignified conditions because this is France. In order to reach these objectives, we must first fight against human trafficking. That despicable trade goes back a long time and is still alive here, exploiting extremely vulnerable people. We must also guarantee the long-term effectiveness of the French and British border. And also secure the port of Calais and the Channel Tunnel. Finally, we must completely and definitively dismantle the land camp," he said.

Around 7-thousand people have sought refuge in the Calais camp, hoping to move on to Britain. These migrants live in poor conditions. Hollande says the situation is a humanitarian emergency and that Britain should do its part to resettle the migrants. Hollande wants the migrants in Calais to be dispersed across France.
